Giggs's senior career began on 2 March 1991 against Everton, but his breakthrough came the following season when he was named PFA Young Player of the Year – an award he retained in 1993. Eric Cantona was his idol and mentor in the early years; the Frenchman's swagger gave the young Welshman the licence to express himself. Roy Keane provided the iron behind Giggs's silk in midfield, while Peter Schmeichel guarded the goal during the early title runs. Up front he supplied countless assists to Andy Cole, Dwight Yorke, Ruud van Nistelrooy and later Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney. Above all stood Sir Alex Ferguson, the manager who signed him as a 14-year-old on his birthday and treated him like a son.
