Retro Graeme Souness Shirt – The Midfield General Who Tamed Europe

Souness began his career at Tottenham Hotspur as a teenager, but it was Middlesbrough where he truly emerged as a top-flight talent under Jack Charlton, dragging the unfashionable Teesside club into European contention. In 1986 he returned to Britain as player-manager of Rangers, instantly revolutionising Scottish football by signing English internationals like Terry Butcher and Chris Woods, breaking sectarian traditions by bringing Mo Johnston to Ibrox in 1989, and winning three Scottish league titles. His later managerial career included Liverpool, Galatasaray (where he famously planted a flag in the centre circle of arch-rivals Fenerbahçe), Blackburn Rovers and Newcastle United. Souness was forged among legends. At Liverpool he played alongside Kenny Dalglish, Ian Rush, Alan Hansen, Phil Neal and Bruce Grobbelaar, forming the spine of arguably the greatest British club side of the 20th century. The trust between Dalglish and Souness was particularly telling – two Scots who lifted European Cups together and later managed against and alongside one another. Bob Paisley and Joe Fagan were the managers who shaped him, refining his discipline and giving him the captain's armband at the perfect moment. At Sampdoria he learned alongside Trevor Francis and under coach Eugenio Bersellini, while sharing dressing rooms with rising Italian talents. With Scotland he played alongside Kenny Dalglish, Joe Jordan and Archie Gemmill, captaining his country at the 1982 World Cup in Spain. As Rangers player-manager he commanded Terry Butcher, Ray Wilkins, Mark Hateley and Mo Johnston, redefining the Scottish game. Rivalries with Manchester United's Bryan Robson, Everton's Peter Reid and later Galatasaray's Fenerbahçe rivals only added to his legend. Few midfielders have shared a pitch with so many icons.
