RB Leipzig's history is unlike any other German club's. Founded on 19 May 2009, the project sidestepped the painstaking traditional route by acquiring SSV Markranstädt's licence for the Oberliga, the fifth tier. In Europe, RB Leipzig have reached a Champions League semi-final in 2019/20 and continue to be a dangerous knockout-stage side. Their rivalries are fierce and modern. Matches against fellow Red Bull–affiliated Salzburg are loaded with subtext, while every away trip in eastern Germany – particularly to Dynamo Dresden – is greeted with banners and protest. The Saxon derby with Erzgebirge Aue and the Bundesliga showdowns with Bayern Munich now define their season. Iconic moments range from Timo Werner's 21-goal Champions League season to the 3–0 demolition of Atlético Madrid in Lisbon. The club's history may be short, but the drama has been unrelenting.

RB Leipzig's brief existence has nonetheless produced a remarkable cast of footballers who have become synonymous with the club's red shirt. Timo Werner is arguably the defining figure of the early Bundesliga years – a lightning-quick forward whose movement and clinical finishing fired Leipzig into Europe and earned a high-profile move to Chelsea before he returned. Naby Keïta, the elegant Guinean midfielder, brought rhythm and bite to the engine room before joining Liverpool, while Emil Forsberg's dead-ball mastery and creative vision made him a fan favourite for years. Centre-back Dayot Upamecano, midfielder Marcel Sabitzer and Hungarian playmaker Dominik Szoboszlai all followed similar trajectories: arrive young, shine in red, depart for Europe's giants. Yussuf Poulsen has been the club's heartbeat – a Dane who has worn the shirt across every division from the third tier to the Champions League. Christopher Nkunku later arrived to become the league's best attacker, scoring goals at a phenomenal rate. In the dugout, Ralph Hasenhüttl built the foundations with his vertical, pressing-led football. Ralf Rangnick, the philosophical architect of the entire Red Bull project, oversaw the rise both as sporting director and head coach. Julian Nagelsmann's brilliant tactical work raised standards further before he left for Bayern, while Marco Rose and Domenico Tedesco have continued the cup-winning era. Because the club is so young, the catalogue of vintage RB Leipzig shirts is concentrated but already iconic. The earliest jerseys, produced by Adidas from 2014 onwards, established the visual identity: bold red with white shoulder stripes, the charging double-bull crest, and Red Bull's name across the chest. The 2015/16 promotion-winning shirt, with its clean white away version, is increasingly sought after by collectors of recent football history. The breakthrough Bundesliga season of 2016/17 produced one of the most coveted modern German kits – red home, navy and red away – worn during that historic runner-up campaign. Champions League editions, often featuring subtle textural patterns and special stadium-night sleeve patches, are particularly desirable.
